Surat: A city-based jeweller Yesh Mashru has lodged a complaint with the crime branch against two of his salesmen for allegedly defrauding him of Rs. 1.45 crore.
Mashru alleged in the complaint that the salesmen sold 354 kg of silver ornaments, valued at Rs. 2.35 crore, but only returned Rs 90 lakh to the firm. Mashru, who operates the partnership firm Balkrishna Jewel, entrusted salesmen Mukesh Lakhotiya and Hardik Khatsuriya with the silver ornaments for sale in major cities across Gujarat and India. These cities include Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Jaipur, Udaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. Both salesmen used to travel by company car for their sales tours. The ornaments were also sent to the salesmen via courier services as required during their travel.

The issue came to light when a trader from Udaipur, Prakash Sharma, alerted Ladlesh Patadiya, who manages Mashru’s firm and handles salesmen-related matters, about the salesmen selling the jewelry at below-market rates. Sharma recognized ornaments by firm’s stamp, as he had a longstanding relationship with Balkrishna Jewel.
Upon learning of the irregularities, Mashru and his team decided to recall all the ornaments from the salesmen. Despite being asked to return the cash and remaining ornaments, the salesmen made excuses and failed to comply. When the firm insisted they come to Surat, only Khatsuriya appeared, admitting to being aware of Lakhotiya’s actions and being offered Rs. 5 lakh to keep quiet. A stock check revealed that between April 20, 2023, and Feb 14 the salesmen were given 354 kg of silver ornaments worth Rs. 2.35 crore to sell but they had only submitted Rs. 90 lakh instead of the expected Rs 2.35 crore. With Rs. 1.45 crore unaccounted for, Mashru filed a complaint with the crime branch on April 8.
