Mangaluru: Volunteers of a trust and students who carried out a highway clean-up drive were in for a shock, when they found 36 tonnes of waste on either side of about 1.5 km of a national highway stretch in the city.
The Vana Charitable Trust, in association with students from institutions in the city, carried out a clean-up drive along the national highway stretch from Kuntikana to Pumpwell on Saturday. This collective endeavour aimed at tackling the mounting waste issues along NH-66 within city limits. The highway clean-up Drive witnessed trust members, students, and like-minded volunteers working together to clear the garbage and transport it to the MCC’s dumpyard at Pachanady.
Environmental activist Jeeth Milan Roche said that the initiative was part of the community’s commitment to combating littering and preserving environmental integrity in the region.
“We began our highway clean-up from Kuntikana at 7:30 am, and completed the drive up to Karnataka Polytechnic (KPT) Junction by evening. We have cleared garbage from both sides of the national highway. We will continue the drive to clear waste on both sides of the remaining 50% of the national highway stretch till Pumpwell. It is an extremely tiresome job to carry out a clean-up drive in the scorching sun,” he said.
The waste heaps by the side of the highway included liquor bottles, old footwear, plastic bags, and several other items people threw carelessly. Students from Roshni Nilaya Institute and Karnataka Polytechnic (KPT), volunteers of the Vana Charitable Trust, and many like-minded people took part in the drive. Meanwhile, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) also extended support by arranging trucks to shift the waste. Residents of an apartment provided food and water to the volunteers, he said. “In fact, it is the responsibility of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to keep the premises clean. Since a huge quantity of waste was lying on either side of the highway stretch, we carried out the drive,” Roche said.
