PUNE: NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday said he is not that old and “can still straighten out some people”.
Pawar was speaking to a gathering during a bullock cart race in Charholi Khurd village of Khed-Rajgurunagar tehsil. Referring to earlier speakers’ speeches, he said: “Some people have talked about my age, but let me tell you that I am not that old.I still have the power to straighten out some people.”
Pawar turned 83 on December 12. His comment is also seen as a response to his nephew and deputy CM Ajit Pawar, who had said the NCP chief should stop working in active politics due to his age.
Govt adding to tillers’ woes: NCP chief
After the split in the NCP, Ajit Pawar had addressed his party workers in Mumbai in July, where he had said that considering his age, Sharad Pawar should now take up a role of political advisor. Against the backdrop of these comments, the NCP chief on Sunday said, “Some people are saying that I have become old, but what have they seen in me to comment this way? I still have the power and if all (supporters) come together, we can teach a lesson to our opposition.”
The NCP supremo further criticized the Central government for imposing a ban on onion exports, and said the government is trying to add to the problems of farmers instead of helping them out. “Those who are in power today do not love farmers. A huge number of farmers produce onions in Khed, but those who have the responsibility to provide good prices are not even ready to look after them. Instead, they have imposed taxes and banned the export of onions,” he declared. He said, “We must create unity to fight against these problems created by the government. I assure you all that with the power of our unity, we will change the picture in Maharashtra. We will not rest till we do so.”
