Thiruvananthapuram: A day after the suicide of Shahana Shaji, 23, at Thiruvallam, police rule out the involvement of her husband Noufal, 32, in her death in view of the statements of the woman’s mother and father giving clean chit to him.
Meanwhile, the relatives of Shahana staged a protest before the Fort ACP office demanding a transparent probe and by demanding to question Noufal and his mother.
Police recorded the statements of Shahana’s parents on Wednesday.
“They told us that the gold ornaments which were given as dowry are still with them and Noufal never demanded dowry. Noufal even rejected their financial support during the construction of a house,” said police.
However, some of her relatives alleged that Shahana was tortured by Noufal and his family, demanding dowry.
“The relatives shared some pictures of her injury on body to substantiate their allegation. So far, we have received nothing against Noufal to add him as an accused in the case over dowry harassment death,” added police.
Police also said that there was no medical history as she was staying at her house for the last three months due to some disputes with him.
“On Wednesday, Noufal called her relatives and parents to inform them about a family function. He had also invited Shahana to attend the function. However, when he reached the house Shahana was not willing to join him, and she sent her son with him. She committed suicide as soon as Noufal left with the baby,” added police.
The mobile phone of Shahana is being examined by police to verify the allegations as well.
“We are looking into the WhatsApp chat between them to check whether dowry was an issue. Without getting evidence we cannot simply put him under scanner,” added police.
Shahana, daughter of Shahjahan and Sulfi of Pachalloor near Vandithadam committed suicide at around 5pm on Tuesday.
