BENGALURU: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday claimed that the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya was “very systematically snatched from the Muslims”.
He told media that Ram Mandir did not exist when Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) was formed, and Mahatma Gandhi never mentioned anything about it. “…the Muslims had offered namaz in the area for 500 years. When Congress’ GB Pant was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, idols were placed inside the masjid. A collector named Nair shut down the masjid and started performing puja there. In the 1950s, Nair became the Jan Sangh’s first member of Parliament,” Owaisi said.
Taking potshots on opposition parties and the BJP, Owaisi questioned Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s decision to organise Sunderkand Paath and Hanuman Chalisa at government schools, raising concerns about imposition of religion in educational institutions.
