AHMEDABAD: Just ahead of Diwali, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has gone into an overdrive. It plans to complete resurfacing of damaged road stretches across the city and while at it, also micro-surface those roads that have survived the monsoons for three years, including the warranty period, and are in good condition.

Presently, 52 roads are in various stages of works.Dense bituminous macadam (DBM) work has been completed on some, while binder course (BC) work has ended on others. By October-end, all 52 roads will be complete, AMC officials say.
“Eight paver plants are under operation and road resurfacing work requiring 3,000-4,000 metric tonnes of material daily has started,” a senior AMC official said. An estimated 1.34 lakh metric tonnes of material will go into resurfacing 111 roads in Ahmedabad city.
On Friday, 13 road stretches were resurfaced, in which an estimated 2,000 metric tonnes of DBM and 1,650 metric tonnes of BC were used. AMC also has plans to resurface roads on the metro route and white-top roads in western areas. “But the roads will be white-topped after the 111 roads are resurfaced.” At present, only roads riddled by potholes are being resurfaced, the official said.
Road resurfacing was discussed at Thursday’s meeting of the standing committee where its chairman Devang Dani had sought daily updates on the work from the engineering department. Dani had also directed the department to complete maximum work before Diwali.
From 2020 to 2023, 1,055 roads cumulating to 548.23km in length have been resurfaced at a cost of Rs 971.27 crore. In the last one year alone, AMC has approved road resurfacing works worth Rs 928 crore and micro-resurfacing works worth Rs 25 crore. White-topping roadworks to the tune of Rs 20 crore are nearing completion, while new work worth Rs 160 crore has been sanctioned and begun. Tenders worth Rs 180 crore for white-topping roads have been released.
