Ludhiana: The municipal corporation (MC) organised anti-encroachment drives in the city and removed illegal roadside vegetable markets from Focal Point Phase 5 (near Nahar Industries) and Sherpur area (near Aarti steels) on Friday evening.
More than 24 encroachments were removed during the drive which was organised jointly by the tehbazaari wing staff of zones A, B, C and D of the civic body.
MC zonal commissioner (zone B) Neeraj Jain said the drive was organised on the directions of MC commissioner Sandeep Rishi to free the roadsides from encroachments. Tehbazaari wing teams of all the four zones were involved in the drive.
Leading to traffic snarls
The areas had rampant encroachments and witnessed regular traffic jams. The civic officials said that traffic congestion was being witnessed in the respective areas due to the encroachments.
Jain stated that to ensure smooth movement of traffic in the areas, warnings have been issued to the encroachers that they should not encroach on the roadsides, otherwise strict action would be taken against them. The concerned officials have been directed to keep a regular check in the areas.
Civic body officials said that regular anti-encroachment drives are organised by MC in different parts of the city to ensure smooth movement of traffic.

The state government has urged the railways to take action and suggested the creation of an SRA-like planning body.
Illegal structures on Manali NH yet to be removed: HP body
The Fourlane Visthapit and Prabahavit Samiti (FVPS) has written to the Himachal Pradesh government and NHAI regarding the removal of illegal structures on the Kiratpur-Manali highway. Despite being acquired years ago with compensation payment in crores, these structures are still standing. There are around 600 such structures, including houses, hotels, shops, and even a college building. The NHAI project director has requested their removal, but no action has been taken. The structures were built on government land and the owners were paid compensation, violating court orders and department directions.
