Gurgaon: The project to redevelop the Rampura-Pataudi road, which links the Gurgaon-Delhi Expressway to new sectors, has been delayed yet again. After rain, delays in land acquisition and a ban on construction activities under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) due to high air pollution levels, a drop in temperature is the latest reason for the delay.
GMDA has now revised the project’s deadline for the second time from December 31 this year to March 2024.Before this, it was expected to be complete by August 2023.
According to GMDA officials, bituminous work on the service road cannot be done due to a drop in temperature. Redevelopment of this 5.6km stretch started in February last year and was supposed to be completed within 18 months. Till now, however, only 70% of the work has been completed.
“After the monsoon was over, we pushed the contractor to speed up the work and tried to recover the time lost during the rainy days. But restrictions were imposed again under GRAP in November, which further halted the progress. Now, the current weather conditions are not conducive for laying a bituminous road, as the bitumen won’t settle down properly and won’t last for long if we go ahead right now,” a senior GMDA official said.
Conceptualised in 2020, the project was initially delayed as the authority had to float the tender thrice before work finally began in February 2022. The project includes the strengthening of the six-lane main carriageway, along with construction of service roads, cycle tracks and footpaths, as well as development of green areas at a cost of Rs 56 crore. Several gated societies, malls, commercial spaces, schools and hospitals are located along this crucial stretch.
Officials said the work on the main carriageway, except for a few patches that are under litigation — including a 120m patch near DLF Ultima and another 100m stretch near Sector 82 of 100m — is nearing completion. A religious structure coming in the alignment of the road, however, hasn’t been removed yet. While construction of cycle track and footpath is under way, GMDA is yet to get possession of about 30% of land for the service road due to pending demarcation, compensation and encroachment.
“Though we have been taking up the matter with the departments concerned, there are around 10 cases which are yet to be resolved. Besides, a religious structure falling under MCM’s jurisdiction is in the way. We have written multiple times for its relocation, but this has not been done yet,” the GMDA official added.
