Rajkot: In a project that was floated by police with people’s help in Dec 2023, the Kutch West police have till now installed over 1,400 CCTV cameras in the border areas of the district to keep a watch on criminal activities.
The project is being implemented with financial support of people in view of the sensitive nature of the places in the border district. While the police give 50% of the fund, the remaining 50% is being given by local panchayats, trade associations, and housing societies.
Kutch shares the country’s border with Pakistan. Kutch West area is also a favourite among tourists who visit places like Mandvi beach and Dhordo (White Rann). Tourists come here from all over the country and also from overseas.
“We have installed CCTV cameras on roads and public places in Kutch West. We have also installed cameras in the coastal villages to keep a watch on anti-national activities,” said J R Mothaliya, inspector general (border range).
The project has been covering remote, coastal and boarder villages. Said Mahendra Bagadiya, superintendent of police, Kutch West: “We have covered the sensitive areas under this project. This cameras will work as ‘Digital Prahari’ and we did this project with people’s participation.”
According to police, a total of 1,457 cameras have been installed till now in villages on the international borders, villages in coastal areas, remote villages, and in urban areas. Because of its coastline, Kutch is vulnerable to smuggling activity and is infamous for drug smuggling.
Intrusion from Pakistan is also common here. Kutch Police work with agencies like the Coast Guard and BSF in the border area to keep a watch on intrusions. These cameras will be helpful in keeping a vigil on all these activities. Police also plan to install two high-resolution cameras — one each at Jakhau and Mandvi.
These high-resolution cameras will have a visibility up to 30km inside the sea and will give pictures about activities near the coastline.
