Vadodara: The WhatsApp groups formed by all the accused in the Harni boat tragedy, which killed 14 including 12 schoolkids, have become an important piece of evidence for the investigators.
The police said that the key accused used to discuss and post finances and daily collection figures from the Harni Lake zone leisure activities, including the boating facility, on these groups.
“This is crucial evidence as we will be able to link all the accused including Paresh Shah who isn’t technically a part of the Kotia Projects that had the contract of the lake zone. Operators of the boating service posted the collection figures on a WhatsApp group and Shah was sent regular updates,” a police official said.
Hence, one of the first things that the cops asked every accused was to submit their mobile phones. Most of them avoided submitting their phones but the police eventually seized them. Even Dharmin Bhatani, who was the last accused to be arrested, claimed to have forgotten his phone in Bangkok.
In the various remand applications filed by the police, one of the key points was the recovery of the phones. The police mentioned in these applications that the mobile phones were crucial evidence in this case. “We have got access to these WhatsApp groups and the important details that we were looking for,” a senior police official said. The police said that with all the 20 accused in their custody, they have started preparing to file a chargesheet in the court by March 16. The 15-seater boat was carrying 29 people including 23 children and it capsized on Jan 28.
