NEW DELHI: In an unusual move, the Union cabinet will meet Sunday morning, a day after Lok Sabha election dates were announced.
Though the meeting’s agenda was not known till late Friday, sources said some key matters may be taken up, as a trade deal with Oman and increasing the Line of Credit to $250 million for Iran’s Chabahar port are among some of the issues on which decisions are pending.
A high level inter-ministerial committee last week had held a meeting on the issue of enhancing the LoC.Discussions on the FTA with Oman where intense negotiations have taken place over the past few months were slated for the last meeting itself, but no decision was announced.
With the ‘model code of conduct’ in place, govt is hamstrung in taking policy decisions but issues related to international relations have been on the table for a while. Any announcement will need to be ratified by the Election CommissionEC.
Following the last cabinet meeting, I&B minister Anurag Thakur had said that the cabinet can meet till the term of the govt as governance is a continuous exercise.
While chairing a recent meeting of the council of ministers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said told ministers and secretaries thatthat governance must not take a backseat during the election process.
