Prayagraj: Even as rising prices burnt a hole in the pockets of the common man, it the spirit of denizens of Sangam city failed to dampen. City markets were flooded with customers till late Saturday night.
Heavy traffic jams and long queues of customers brought smiles on the faces of shop owners who were struggling with slow-down of the market.
On Saturday too, the markets were buzzing with hectic activity as people flooded stalls selling idols of Ganesh and Laxmi along with earthen lamps of different shapes and sizes.The decorative diyas, made by the potters of Bengal and Gorakhpur, were among the customers’ top choices.
Shop owners at the Civil Lines market, which is the hub of most of the showrooms of electronic gadgets and branded clothes, claimed that they received heavy footfall this Diwali season. “We had good business on Dhanteras and also on Saturday as people kept coming in to buy home appliances, gold, etc.,” said Amit, a shop owner.
As far as sale of vehicles, ornaments of gold, silver and diamond, garments, gift items, electronic gadgets etc is concerned, all registered a good sale this Diwali season. Shopkeepers and jewellers found it hard to tackle the rush at their showrooms and they even spent a lot on advertisement. The auto sector, selling motorcycles of different brands and four wheelers also saw a favorable spurt in the sales as large numbers of denizens purchased two-wheelers and four wheelers.
But with the markets flooded with customers, people were trapped in road jams till late night. All roads leading to eminent city markets like civil lines, katra and chowk were crowded with vehicles and long jams were seen even on popular ‘escape bylanes’.
