HYDERABAD: About two weeks after Mohammed Abdul from the city went missing in the US, the Consulate General of India (CGI), New York, has said it has taken up the case with the authorities.
“The CGI is in touch with the family of Mohammad Abdul Arfath (25) and authorities in the US. We are working with local law enforcement agencies to find him at the earliest,” CGI New York informed on ‘X’ on Thursday.
Abdul has been reportedly missing from Cleveland since March 7.A resident of Nacharam in Hyderabad, the youngster had gone to the US in May 2023 to pursue his masters in IT from Cleveland University.
On March 19, Abdul’s family in the city had received a ransom call from an unidentified person in the US who demanded $1,200 to get the student released. The caller claimed that the drug mafia was behind Abdul’s abduction. Family and friends tried to call back on the number but they did not get any response.
On the day Abdul was reported missing, local authorities checked CCTV footage and noticed that he was near a retail store.
An Indian-origin group of people with roots in Hyderabad are also searching for the missing student. Social worker and MBT leader Amjed Ullah Khan told TOI that he had informed the group in Chicago about Abdul. “They spoke to his roommates,” he said.
