Surat: A 28-year-old man was booked for cheating his cousin, a furniture shop owner, of Rs 35.35 lakh. Police booked Rahul Chugh for cheating his cousin Hemant Grover by siphoning money from furniture shop’s bank account to his personal bank account. The investigation in the case was handed over to the economic offence cell of the city police.
According to case details, Grover owns a furniture firm in Bhatar area.In 2014, when his maternal uncle Ashok Chugh died, Grover took responsibility of his family and also employed his son Rahul as a sales manager. Grover would also pay Chugh’s home rent and other expenses. After four years, Grover promoted Chugh and entrusted him with administrative responsibilities including sales, purchase, dispatch, manufacturing and delivery.

In 2023, Chugh suddenly stopped coming to Grover’s firm and even blocked his phone number. When Grover checked his bank accounts, he found that Chugh had deposited payments from clients to his personal account. After checking all the accounts, Grover realized that Chugh had siphoned Rs 35.35 lakh from the company’s account.
One of the clients, Kartik Arora had ordered furniture worth Rs 30 lakh from the firm. However, Chugh gave him Rs 5 lakh discount without telling Grover. Of the Rs 30 lakh payment, Rs.14.5 lakh was deposited in the company’s account. The remaining amount Arora gave to Chugh.
Chugh deposited the money from clients in his personal bank account and in his mother’s personal account. Police said that Chugh also took Rs 4.30 lakh cash from the firm’s account. Chugh used the money to buy a car, pay for a marriage banquet hall, his honeymoon and a life insurance policy. Chugh never returned the money.
When Chugh did not return the money, Grover gave an application to Surat police in Jan 2024 based on which, an FIR was filed on Apr 13.
