MUMBAI: The founder of an educational company took to X (formerly Twitter) to complain that the traffic police had towed away his electric car while it was being charged at a charging station in South Mumbai and issued a challan for unauthorized parking. He also complained that he was forced to pay the e-challan as otherwise his car was not being released. He tagged theMumbai Police in his post and also uploaded videos from the location.
In the videos, the complainant stated that his electric car was being charged at a charging station near Mantralaya on December 5. “The Marine Drive police towed it while it was being charged. The charging pin is still dangling from the vehicle,” he said in the video, pointing to his clamped vehicle. He shot a video of Marine Drive police staff that had challaned him. He also posted a copy of the e-challan which showed that a fine of Rs 972 had been paid for the violation. He has demanded an enquiry and a refund.
The Mumbai Police forwarded his complaint to the Mumbai Traffic Police‘s handle on X.
Last week, MP Amol Kolhe had taken to ‘X’ accusing the Mumbai Traffic Police of ”vasooli” when his car was intercepted at Chembur and the driver was asked to clear pending fines. In response to Kolhe, the traffic police had said that his vehicle had run up 15 e-challans– 12 of them for speeding– and dues should be paid as soon as possible.
Between 2019 and 2023, Mumbai Traffic Police have collected Rs 579.9 crore towards e-challan fines. But in the same period, Rs 685 crores remains pending and the traffic department has been pulling out all stops to recover dues.
