TRICHY: Two people, including a priest, sustained burn injuries in a fire accident during the ongoing Poochorithal festival at the Samayapuram Mariamman Temple near Trichy on Monday morning. Temple workers doused the fire immediately.
The Hindu religious and charitable endowment (HR&CE) department that manages the Samayapuram Mariamman Temple said the fire accident occurred around 5.10am.
A temple priest, identified as Guru alias Guruvayurappan, was performing special rituals with a lamp for the Soorappa Nayakkar Ambal near the shrine of the temple’s processional deity. While lifting the lamp to worship the deity, a decorated thatched roof made of vetiver (a grass variety) caught fire.
A part of the decorated roof fell on the priest and a temple kitchen worker, identified as Naganathan, who was accompanying the priest. The temple priest and the worker sustained minor burn injuries on their hands and shoulders.
They were admitted to a private hospital. Their conditions were said to be stable.
HR&CE department said that devotees were not injured in the fire accident. “We did not close the temple, but a remedial puja (parikaram) was performed. Milk abhishekam was conducted for the deity. Temple CCTVs have recorded the events, and we are examining the footage,” Samayapuram temple joint commissioner C Kalyani told TOI.
