Kalaburagi: India’s Ramkumar Ramanathan powered into the semifinals at the Ultratech Cement ITF Kalaburagi Openat the Chandrashekhar Patil Stadium here on Friday. In the quarterfinals, the fifth-seeded Ramkumar quelled the challenge of compatriot and giant-killer Manish Sureshkumar 7-5, 6-0 and set up a last-four showdown with Japan’s Ryotaro Taguchi.Taguchi outplayedAryan Shah 6-3, 6-2, while sixth seed Rishab Agarwal went down 0-6, 4-6 to second seed Matsuda Ryuki of Japan.
Ryuki will take on Austria’s David Pichler in the other semifinal. Pichler hardly broke sweat in his 6-0, 6-0 annihilation of Japan’s Seita Watanabe. Winner of two ITF titles in the last two months, Ramkumar had his hands full against fellow Chennai player, at least early in the first set. After being broken in the eighth game, Ramkumar fought back in stunning fashion.
He made the most of Manish’s unforced errors in the ninth game and never looked back thereafter, winning the next nine games on the trot to make the last-four stage.
