The Sayajigunj police on Friday exposed a racket of selling cheap Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) bottled in high-end whiskey bottles.
This liquor can at best be called black tea spiked with cheap liquor!
The accused would boil tea in water and then dilute the cheap alcohol with it to ensure that its strong taste was diluted without compromising on the colour. This was then poured into liquor bottles of costly brands.
Acting on a tip off, the Sayajigunj police raided a house in Kalyannagar area of the city and busted a racket of selling ‘duplicate’ liquor. The duplication was being run as a family business and three persons including a woman were held in connection with the offence.
Sayajigunj police inspector R G Jadeja said that one cheap liquor bottle was used to make three bottles of costly whiskey. “It was diluted with tea boiled in water to ensure it looked like whiskey,” he added.
During the raid, the police found liquors of a cheap whiskey brand from Goa and bottles of imported whiskey as well as prominent Indian whiskey brands. The imported brands whose bottles were found included Jack Daniels, 100 Pipers, Black Dog, Green Label, Black and While, Passport, Old Smuggler, Teachers and Absolut.
Sources said that the accused used to procure the empty bottles from scrap dealers. The cardboard cartons used to pack individual bottles were also found during the raid.
Three persons including Saeed Sheikh, his son Shakil and Saeed’s daughter-in-law Rukhsar were held by the police during the raid. Rukhsar’s is married to Saeed’s son Sajid who was absconding along with his brother Sohil.
The total value of the liquor and other material seized during the raid is estimated to be Rs 17,735. Jadeja said that the accused were questioned before being sent to judicial custody.
