Udhagamandalam: Officials of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) conducted an inquiry with NGOs, wildlife activists, and locals on Tuesday in connection with the death of 10 tigers in the Nilgiris in the past two months.
The Nilgiris reported 10 tiger deaths, including six cubs, in different places in 40 days in August and September.
Deputy director of MTR (buffer zone) Arun Kumar said, “As per the Standard Operative Procedure (SOP) prescribed by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), we have conducted an inquiry with locals and NGOs involved in the postmortem operation of the carcasses of the tigers.The NGOs are Keystone and WWF.”
The forest department must investigate all the 10 tiger deaths, he said.
“Hence, we do a lot of investigation according to NTCA guidelines and submit a report to them,” Arun Kumar said.
On Tuesday, the forest officials questioned individuals who gave open statements to the media that the tiger deaths were for poaching.
“Locals and people working on those landscapes where the tigers were found dead were also inquired,” a forest official said.
Reports of the inquiry, perambulation and the sample test results from various labs will be correlated accordingly to arrive at a final report, to be sent to the NTCA, he added.
A few people who didn’t turn up for the inquiry will be called again.

The deaths have been attributed to factors such as aging, territorial fights, and the increasing population of tigers. The state has a population of around 560 big cats, with Corbett Tiger Reserve having the highest density. Experts suggest that as tiger births increase, the state should focus on maintaining corridor connectivity to reduce human interaction with tigers.

Forest department officials raids the residence of Jaggesh, Darshan and Producer Rockline Venkatesh residences in search of Tiger claws pendant
The residences of actors Jaggesh, Darshan, and producer Rockline Venkatesh were raided by Karnataka Forest department officials after images of them wearing lockets with pendants made of tiger claws surfaced online. Separate teams have been formed to investigate the allegations. If the tiger claws are found to be genuine, appropriate action will be taken as per the Karnataka Wildlife Protection Act 1872. Jaggesh’s wife has already handed over the pendant to officials for further investigation. Earlier, Nikhil Kumarswamy clarified that the pendant he wore during his wedding was a fake one.
