SURAT: Wife of a diamond worker, grappling with acute financial distress, fell into the trap of superstitions and was raped several times in a temple by a self-proclaimed godman who also extracted Rs 14 lakh from her over the last two years.
The godman Kanu alias Kalpesh Korat’s wife was the partner in this crime as she pretended to be a deity capable of alleviating her family’s financial troubles.
The Sarthana police arrested Korat but his wife Hetalba is on the run.
The woman took loans to pay Korat the money he demanded for various rituals and black magic. During the rituals, she was raped in the temple where Korat told her that his wife Hetalba embodied divine presence.
According to case details, the woman discussed the financial condition with a neighbour who gave her reference to a Hetalba temple in Pramukh Park Society in Sarthana. The woman was told that if regularly visited the temple and performed the rituals, her problems would be solved. Confiding in them, she started frequenting the temple.
After she met the couple, they told her to come every Tuesday. During one such visit, she was told that an evil spirit had laid siege to her old house in Junagadh and that she should perform some rituals to get rid of it. When she agreed, Korat and his wife started demanding money from her on the pretext of different rituals.
During the ritual, Korat would lock the temple’s room and place a lemon and chilly on the woman’s head, and ask her to mediate with her eyes closed. Korat then started making sexual advances and thrashed her when she objected to it. He then raped her multiple times.
After one such ritual, Korat gave the woman a copper pot filled with stones and told her that these would turn into diamonds and pearls. As her problems were not solved, Korat continued to ask for money and the woman victim realized that she was cheated.
Sarthana police inspector KA Chavda told TOI: “We have arrested Korat and Hetalba will also be nabbed soon. The woman took personal loans and encashed her deposits to pay the couple. She had also taken money from the private lenders. We are investigating if Korat had cheated more people similarly.”
