Coimbatore: A 22-year-old youth was arrested on Friday evening for raping a Class X girl, who was his cousin, on several occasions in the past few months at her house.
The Karamadai police said the youth was married with a son and daughter. A daily wage labourer, he had impregnated the minor girl with a promise to marry her and given her some tablets to abort the pregnancy, a police officer said.
He said the youth was a resident of a village near Periyanaickenpalayam on the outskirts of the city. “The girl was in the habit of talking to the youth often over the phone. Her mother had scolded her often for the same and advised her to focus on her studies.”
On October 29, the officer said, the girl left her friend’s house, with a promise to return home early. When she didn’t return till night, her mother lodged a complaint with the Karamadai police, who registered a missing person case.
“On Friday morning, we traced the girl, who was in the company of the youth, and rescued her,” the officer said.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that they were in love for the past three years. “While the youth had married another woman four years ago, he promised to marry his minor cousin and raped her on several occasions. When the girl became pregnant a few months ago, he gave her tablets to abort the pregnancy,” the officer said.
Based on the girl’s confession statement, the Karamadai police altered the missing person case to under sections 313, 343 and 366 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 5(l) read with 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and arrested the youth the same evening. Later, he was produced before the special court for the Pocso cases and lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison under judicial custody.
