PATNA: While increasing number of road accidents remain a matter of serious concern across the country, it is heartening to see Bihar not figuring among the list of top 10 states registering maximum number of road mishaps.
According to the latest data released by minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari, Tamil Nadu with 64,105 accidents remained on the top in matter of reporting highest number of road mishaps in 2022, followed by Madhya Pradesh (54,432), Kerala (43,910), Uttar Pradesh (41,746), Karnataka (39,762), Maharashtra(33,383), Rajasthan (23,614), Telangana (21,619), Andhra Pradesh (21,249) and Gujarat (15,751).Bihar, on the other hand, reported only 10,801 road accidents during the same year.
However, Bihar figures at number 10 position in matters of road accidents (4,601) on National Highways during 2022. Tamil Nadu again grabbed number one position for reporting the largest number of 18,972 road accidents on National Highways.
Again, Bihar remains at number seven position in matter of accident deaths during 2021 to 2022 while UP recording the highest share with 13.4 per cent of accident deaths. In terms of percentage change of accident-related deaths over previous year, however, Karnataka with 16.6%, Tamil Nadu with 16.3% and Bihar with 16.2% registered the highest growth over the previous year which are above the national average of 9.4%, reports said.
Experts attribute lower road accident cases in Bihar to the total prohibition enforced by the state government seven years back in 2016. With consumption, manufacture and sale of liquor remaining totally banned in the state, people driving cars and bikes are said to be quite alert while negotiating the roads, experts say.
Stringent liquor laws enacted by the state government are said to have compelled the bikers and drivers moving on the roads to follow traffic rules and avoid rash driving, thus bringing the road accident cases down in the state.
