Varanasi: A special task force (STF) cracked down on a smuggling gang using luxury cars like BMWs to transport ganja, arresting three members on Sunday at the Lodhi toll plaza in Sonbhadra district.
Acting on intelligence about a large ganja consignment heading from Odisha to Varanasi, a Lucknow STF team reached Sonbhadra and, with local police assistance, blocked the toll plaza.They intercepted three cars and arrested Mohd Irshad, Mohd Naushad, and Ravi Baske, all from Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.
The operation yielded a significant haul: 295 kg of ganja, three cars (including a BMW, Baleno, and Seltos), four fake license plates, a gold ring, Rs 1,320 in cash, four mobile phones, ATM & pan cards, and DLs Initial interrogation revealed that the gang’s leader, Ramkumar Singh from Jharkhand, operates from Varanasi, sourcing ganja from Odisha and other eastern and southern states. Two cars, including the BMW, belonged to Ramkumar, while the third belonged to one Vishal Srivastava. Naushad confessed to receiving Rs 50,000 per delivery from Ramkumar.
