PATIALA: Two persons including a Congress leader and his sister-in-law were shot dead in their house in Kartarpur village of Nurpur Bedi in Ropar district on Monday night by some assailants following an alleged old rivalry.
One of the family members was left injured and hospitalized in the incident and was shifted to PGI Chandigarh.
The deceased has been identified as Congress leader Karamchand, and his sister-in-law Geeta of Kartarpur village.Karamchand’s wifeBholi Devi is a Congress former block samiti member of Nurpur Bedi.
The police said that both the groups had landed in several disputes in the past and had old rivalry but on Monday evening a fresh dispute took place after the speeding car Karamchand’s family member had spread the mud on the accused following which heated arguments took place. Later, the accused in two luxury cars reached the house of Karamchand and opened several rounds of fire leaving Karamchand and Geeta dead on the spot and Karamchand’s son Sandeep injured with the bullets.
“According to the information from the eyewitnesses, the accused opened around 15 rounds of fire though we have recovered only a few shells. The two groups had an old rivalry as in the past they landed in dispute with each other but every time, the matter was resolved at Panchayat level. The fresh controversy landed after Sandeep had spread mud on the accused while driving his car”, said Anandpur Sahib DSP Ajay Singh.
The police have booked nine identified and 15 unidentified accused of which two have been arrested.
“We have arrested two accused identified as Jaswant Singh and Neeraj Kumar while the hunt to nab the remaining accused is going on. We are checking the CCTV footage to identify more accused involved in the murder. So far, no recovery has been made from the arrested accused. The case against all the accused has been registered under sections 302, 307, 450, 148, 149, and 120 B of Indian Penal Code and under sections 25/54/59 of Arms Act. Further investigation is going on”, said Nurpur Bedi Station House Officer (SHO) Gurvinder Singh Dhillon.
Rana KP, former assembly speaker, visited the family of the deceased at Anandpur Sahib civil hospital and said that police should investigate the inflow of illegal weapons in the district. He said that Congressmen were being targeted frequently in the state.
Former Youth Congress leader Barinder Singh Dhillon who hails from Ropar said, “The accused were having close relations with the local legislator too and thus had turned fearless to shape the crime in such a way.”
Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring tweeted on X, “The husband and sister-in-law of our block committee member Bhola Deviji have been brutally murdered at Kartarpur village of Sri Anandpur Sahib. What is happening in Punjab? Is no one safe here? It is a total violation of law and order. Any Punjabi can now become a target even in his own home. The Punjab government should take immediate action on this and take action against the culprits, otherwise the Congress party will choose the path of struggle.
